ENG 2003 which is a course taken by engineering students in the second year is all about communication. It teaches us how to communicate with each other in the best possible way. It teaches how to listen to each other and learn from one another for the better.
I was able to learn so many new tips and tricks about communication. I expended my ability and skill to express my ideas through my words. This will help me out in the future. It is very important to be able to communicate effectively with others so no misunderstandings happen.
As an engineer the last thing that should happen is miss communication between the engineers or the crew, it may cause some serious trouble or even lives lost. Engineers should be able to communicate with each other without any problems.
I’ll talk to you about some important tips and tricks I learned while taking ENG 2003.
Firstly, through first few weeks I was able to learn all the Axioms of communication. These Axioms showed a proper path way to learn how to communicate with others. “Communication is not simply an exchange of ideas or information, but an interaction between people”. This had an impact of my way of thinking and communicating. I started to understand emotions and feelings should also be a part of communication.
Secondly, I learned about Digital Modes of communication. Before I didn’t really care about how I wrote an email or an SMS however after learning about Digital Modes of communication I was able to improve my skills greatly. I started to understand how much of an impact the written content in an email can have a impact on the person receiving it.
Thirdly, we did an activity in class where we had to show others how we felt without talking, For example, we had to show anger, happiness and so on. This activity helped everybody understand communication is not only through emails or messages but also through feelings and emotions on faces.
Later on, we learned about how to Pitch our ideas and thoughts. Brainstorming was a good technique which we had to use. Pitching is one important skill for communicating with others. Being able to clearly and effectively present ideas is the most important goal in this course, ENG 2003.
Technical Writing and editing was the next big topic I learned in ENG 2003. It is crucial one doesn’t make grammar or spelling mistakes on a written project. I learned how to write properly and how to go over my writing and edit it if needed to minimize the amount of mistakes.
Lastly, we learned about Presentation tips. I learned a lot personally because I was never a fan of presentations but through the lectures I was able to understand the concepts of presenting. I learned I should be confident and tell stories and give examples. Making eye contact is also crucial to keep everybody interested. Using collaborative langue is also a good idea. Also, keeping one idea per slide prevents the audience from confusion.
